Finding the Golden Rule

Jesus Golden Rule Ruler

Of course you can just do the ruler activity - or you can do the study plan as well -- whatever fills your need.

This is a multi- purpose activity and study plan

The ruler is actual size (true 6 inch ruler) and may be used in classroom activities when each child needs a ruler. (see instructions)

Its main purpose is to understand and remind children of Jesus' Golden rule.....

Grades: 2 through 8th grade

New Testament Bible stories

Matthew 7: 9-12 and Luke 6: 27-33

1 Copy of the rulers page per every 4 students
Scissors
Pen or pencils
Bible passages below,

Print enough copies of the rulers for your class - there are 4 on a page. Get another ruler and measure your printed pages to be sure the rulers are the correct size. Rough cut apart the page into 4 rulers with instructions.

With the class

Look at the ruler. See the Bible passages.

Read both Bible references Matthew 7: 9-12 and Luke 6: 27-33. Traditionally the second is only Luke 6: 27-31, but I hold that the following verses give good examples on how you may think on all these verses and apply them.

Use your own Bibles and have the class read the passages from printed copies of the scriptures below, or the teacher may read the passages.

The Sources for THE GOLDEN RULE
Read all of the passages first.
What words are the same in both sets of passages?
Circle the same passages.
What is the Golden Rule?
If you were to say it another way, what would you say?

Matthew 7
9 Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? 10 Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 "In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.

Luke 6 traditional verses 27-31, with added verses 32 and 33 which gives examples and understanding.

27 "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.

FIND THE GOLDEN RULE.

Getting the idea is better than getting the old words......

Talk about these passages with the class. Ask the students what they think the 'Golden Rule" is.

What words are the same in both sets of passages?
Circle the same passages. (If you have printed out the scripture pages below)

Write out some of their ideas on the dry erase board, blackboard or easel pad.

What is the Golden Rule?
If you were to say it another way, what would you say?

Vote on agreement for the final idea. Try to "Boil it down" to a few words we use today such as "Treat others as you want to be treated" or "do to others what you want others to do to you" or the old traditional, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." ....But I believe it is better to get the right idea than the archaic words.

for just the ruler

1. Write in what the Golden rule is in the blank area on the ruler.
     -write small!
2. Cut out the ruler.
