Gen 1:14  

And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years,

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years,

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years,

This better defines that the firmament may be a part of heaven, what we know as the sky. Now the earth has specific light, and signs to  measure days, seasons and years –

which means time as we know it. 

Gen 1:15  

and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so.

and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.

And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

15 and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth." And it was so.

This is the plan for lighting the earth.

Gen 1:16  

And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also.

God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also.

16 God made the two great lights--the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night--and the stars.

God took the light (energy) and made the greater light which is the sun. He made the lesser light which  is the moon, and the stars which are the stars. God decided on their purpose.

Gen 1:17  

And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth,

God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth,

And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth

to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
