Gen 1:6  

And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."

And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.”

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."

 Firmament is defined as the “vault of heaven” or sky.

Remember, God created heaven on the first day.
See day four also. 

Gen 1:7  

And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so.

So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so.

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which [were] under the firmament from the waters which [were] above the firmament: and it was so.

So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so.

If you use the word sky in place of the word, firmament, God put sky between water. It is reasonable to think this is   beginning to be something like clouds above and water below. But still not like we know it today. The “earth’ is still scattered and not a planet yet.

Gen 1:8  

And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day

Tricky part:  depending on which translation you use, this says sky or heaven, but God already created heaven on day one. What do you think?
