Kid's Sunday Schoool Craft - Fuzzy Butterfly - Chenille aka Pipe Cleaner craft

Multi-purpose butterfly - resurrection craft or Easter craft, representing new life in Christ. Great season appropriate Summer Sunday School craft for new life too. VBS craft for evidencing God's amazing creations.

Fuzzy Butterfly

We've made it easy!

Typically the butterfly represent the new life Christ promised to us. The butterfly is also an amazing example of God's marvelous creations....it flies, there are so many varieties, they are beautiful and gentle. This is a kids butterfly for Resurrection, creation or celebrating summer in God's World.

Whether you call the long fuzzy wire things chenille sticks or pipe cleaners, they are the basis for this kids craft. The pipe cleaners can also be said to tie in the idea that fuzzy caterpillars become butterflies!
You can use either thin cloth or thin wrapping paper for the wing filler.

You can do this craft over several sessions or in about 30 minutes. If you divide up the craft into more than one session, use the body with the feelers to represent the caterpillar when illustrating "new life".

You decide if the "right side" shows the pipe cleaner or not. It's your choice. They are adorable when done.

Summer Complete Grades: 1 through 6th grade

PLAN AHEAD

	Copy of the butterfly pattern for each student
	3 Long chenille sticks per child (pipe cleaners)
	Scissors
	White glue
	5x7 inch piece of thin cloth or wrapping paper per butterfly
	Pencil or fine line marker for tracing
	Damp paper towels

Teacher: Get thin cloth or wrapping paper and pre-cut into the rectangles stated above

Follow the instructions on the butterfly pattern and the ADDED INFORMATION below.

Please follow the sequence indicated.

You work right on the printed sheet with the pipe cleaners.

The numbers in these visual instructions may differ from the numbers shown on the pattern itself.

Tail fingers are the beginning and end of the pipe cleaner wing wires beyond the twist.


1. Making the wing wires. Tape the pipe cleaner end to the end of the wing wire pattern- right on the paper. Hold the cleaner in the path (Call it a road) with one hand and bend the pipe cleaner along the butterfly wing with the other hand. Continue around the wing.	1 (continued) When you end, be sure the pipe cleaner matches the path of the pattern. Fix if needed. Where the pipe cleaner crosses itself on the X, release the tape. Bring the bottom tail fingers over the top tail finger and then the other tail finger over the first one creating the original shape but crossed closed. Twist shut. THIS IS THE WING WIRE TWIST. Check your shape again and make any adjustment in the shape to fit the (road) path. . MAKE 2 wing wires.


2. Tape the end of another pipe cleaner to the end of the W for the body. Hold down the pipe cleaner with one hand as you bend it with the other hand along the path ( or road) to make the W. Release it from the paper when you are done. Squeeze it together (sideways). Hold the pipe cleaner at approximately where the Xs come together in your left hand. A tiny bit of the top curve should be in your hand along with the 2 ends. This is the head and feelers. (If right handed hold the ends and bit of curve in your left hand. If left handed, reverse the process). Grab all that is sticking out below with your other hand and twist it 2 or 3 times to create the body.
3 Attaching the body to the wing wires. Put glue on the tail fingers as shown above. This is messy. Have damp paper towels available. Hold the body in one hand. Bring the wing wire up to the body, perpendicular to it. This will give you a tail finger in front and one in back. With the hand that was holding the body, Wrap or roll the back tail finger around the body. Wrap or roll the front tail finger around the bodysnug as you can. Turn the wing upright in line with the body. Put on both wing wires. Put aside for glue to set.
4 Cut out the butterfly wing pattern for cloth or paper. Trace it onto 2 pieces of thin cloth or wrapping paper that are opposites of each other. OPPOSITES Leaving the cloth or wrapping paper on the table, lay the pattern face up over it and trace. Before cutting, or moving the cloth (or wrapping paper) , pick up the pattern and lay it face down on the wrapping paper or cloth and trace. Now cut. Teachers may rough cut material double the size of the wing pattern and fold in half. Trace on one side and cut through both pieces holding near the cutting line. You can otherwise temporarily tape the two pieces over the cut edge after you have cut an inch or two along the cutting line. Add tape in more places if needed. Remove tape after cutting.
4.Layout the pipe cleaner wings as shown with the head and feelers up. There is a picture on the pattern. (Be careful, in case the end of the wing wire is sharp)
5. Work right on the pattern paper. Run a medium heavy line of glue all around the top of both wing wire pipe cleaners, AND the body where the wing wires wrap around the body. The fuzzy part of the pipe cleaner may soak up the glue, so be sure it is ample. Before you glue to the wing wire decide if you want to see the pipe cleaner and the pattern cloth or paper, or if you want to see the the pattern cloth or paper without the pipe cleaner. It is just a matter of flipping the pattern cloth or paper over when you glue it to the wing wire, but once you start, it is messy to change . NOTE: Keep all pieces on your pattern paper to avoid gluing to the table.
6. Lay the cut cloth or wrapping paper over the pipe cleaner wing wire. Match it (move the cloth if needed) and tap it into the glue. The cloth should overlap just a bit. Do the same with the second wing. Let dry on the pattern paper.

ADDED INFORMATION

Teacher check the bending the wing tails around the body. There should be enough tail finger to go at least a little more than half way around the body. Then be sure to glue again when running the glue around the wing wire pipe cleaners.
